Botswana deliberately runs a high-value, low-volume tourism model — and the two ways to experience it price a world apart. The good news: both are spectacular, and many trips combine them.
The fly-in safari (concession country)
- What it is: light-aircraft hops from Maun or Kasane into private concessions (Vumbura, Khwai private, Linyanti, Duba) with all-inclusive camps — activities, food, drinks, fees.
- What it costs: roughly US$500–2,000+ per person per night. The Delta is Africa’s most expensive safari real estate, by design.
- What it buys: unfenced, uncrowded wilderness; off-road and night drives; walking and mokoro from camp; guides who grew up on this ground. The seat-rate charter network makes multi-camp itineraries effortless.
The self-drive safari (public parks)
- What it is: your own 4×4 (Maun/Kasane/Gaborone hire or your overland rig) through Moremi, Chobe, Savuti, the Makgadikgadi and the CKGR, camping or lodge-hopping.
- What it costs: vehicle US$80–200/day, campsites US$25–35/person, park fees single-digit dollars — a tenth of the fly-in price.
- What it buys: independence, the best-value sightings-per-dollar in Africa (Chobe riverfront, Khwai community area), and the deep-sand satisfaction of Savuti and Deception Valley.

The hybrid most people should do
Fly-in for the Delta, self-drive for the rest. Two or three concession nights in the waterways (where vehicles can't go anyway), then a Chobe/Khwai/Savuti road loop or the Makgadikgadi pans for meerkats and the sky.
