Rwanda’s gorilla trek is the polished version of the experience: short, well-managed treks onto the bamboo-clad slopes of the Virungas behind trackers who find the families before dawn. Treks typically run 1–4 hours (some longer on the big groups), the 12 habituated families are among the most studied gorillas alive, and the trailheads sit 25 km from Musanze town. Golden-monkey permits are a cheap, joyful add-on, and the Fossey hike rewards history-minded trekkers.

What to pack

Waterproof boots with ankle support, rain shell and gaiters, gardening gloves, warm layer (2,400–3,000 m cold mornings), 2 L water and snacks. Porters available at trailhead (~US$10–15) — hire one.

Park fees

Gorilla permits cost **US$1,500 per person** via Rwanda Development Board (RDB) or operators — the premium tier, reflecting exclusivity and short logistics. Golden monkeys ≈ US$100, Bisoke hike ≈ US$75, Fossey hike ≈ US$75. Confirm current rates with RDB.

Wildlife safety

Same ape rules as everywhere: 7–10 m, no trekking while ill, follow guides absolutely. Buffalo graze the lower slopes — rangers carry for them, not for gorillas.

A flagship park: expect higher park fees and premium lodges, and plan further ahead in peak season.
