Lemosho Route

From Londorossi Gate · 8 days

  • Challenging
  • Acclimatisation 4/5
  • Best season: Jun-Oct and Dec-Feb

A long, scenic approach from the west that crosses the Shira plateau and joins the Machame route at Barranco. The extra days and the gradual gain in altitude give the best acclimatisation of the standard routes, which is why it has one of the highest summit success rates. It starts with a game drive through forest, so you may see buffalo and monkeys on day one.

Altitude sickness

Lemosho's seven-to-eight-day profile is one of the best acclimatisation designs on the mountain, with a gradual start through the forest. Good odds still do not guarantee comfort: monitor for headache, nausea and sleeplessness, keep hydrating, and never hide symptoms from your guides.

General guidance only — not medical advice. Consult a doctor or travel clinic before your climb to discuss altitude risk and your personal health.

Fitness preparation

Recommended for trekkers with solid day-hiking fitness. The scenic route rewards preparation: 6-8 weeks of loaded hikes, sustained cardio and practice back-to-back walking days before departure.

Guides & porter welfare (KPAP)

Lemosho's longer route means larger crews — ethical operator choice matters even more. KPAP-partner operators are audited for porter treatment (gear, food, 20 kg load cap, fair pay). Check partner status at kpap.org before booking.

Tipping guide

Budget roughly US$300-400 per climber for the full eight-day crew. As a KPAP-aligned baseline: US$10-15/day per porter, US$15-25/day for the head guide. Present tips individually at the gate farewell ceremony in TZS or clean USD.

Permit notes

Lemosho fees are charged per day and include conservation, camping and rescue components. Because the route is longer it costs more than Marangu or Machame, even before crew tips. Permits are non-transferable and dates are checked at the gate.
