Amboseli’s dust bowls and permanent swamps (Enkongo Narok, Longinye) concentrate wildlife in the dry months, and its habituated elephants — descendants of the study herds made famous by the Amboseli Elephant Research Project — are among the most relaxed in Africa. The Observation Hill viewpoint overlooks the swamps; Kilimanjaro shows its snows most mornings before the clouds build.

What to pack

Serious dust protection (camera wraps, buffs), warm layers for mornings, sun protection for the exposed lake bed, and a beanbag or VR lens for shooting from the roof hatch.

Park fees

KWS park entry is roughly USD 60 per adult day in high season (less off-peak and for citizens), payable cash/card or via eCitizen. Fees change — check Kenya Wildlife Service before travel.

Wildlife safety

Elephants here are calm but enormous — keep distance at riverbed crossings and never leave vehicles outside designated points.
