The Mara is the northern Serengeti: rolling savanna cut by the Mara and Talek rivers, and from roughly July to October the stage for hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra pushing north — with dramatic Mara River crossings. Game driving is superb year-round (big cats especially), the reserve is matted with a fine road network, and hot-air balloons launch at dawn from most camps. The private conservancies (Mara North, Olare Motorogi, Naboisho) cost more per night but allow off-road driving, night drives and far fewer vehicles per sighting.

What to pack

Layers for cold 5–15 °C dawn drives even in August; a soft duffel (airstrip luggage limits), binoculars, dust buffs for the dry-season tracks, and neutral clothing. Malaria prophylaxis is standard advice here — confirm with your travel clinic.

Park fees

Reserve entry is roughly USD 100–200 per adult per 24 h in the migration season (lower off-peak, and for Kenyan citizens), paid cash or card at the gate or in advance via the county e-payment system. Conservancy fees are folded into camp prices. Fees change — verify current rates before travel.

Wildlife safety

Stay in your vehicle except at designated picnic points; the Mara’s cats are habituated but wild. In camps, escort night walks with staff. Never bait or crowd cats for photos — drivers can be fined.

A flagship park: expect higher park fees and premium lodges, and plan further ahead in peak season.
