The Namib is the oldest desert on Earth, and Namib-Naukluft protects its heart: the Sossusvlei dune sea, the sculpted Naukluft massif, and gravel plains where oryx pose against nothing. This is landscape safari rather than big-five safari — the game is sparse, stunningly adapted, and the schedule revolves around dawn light on the dunes. Balloon flights from Sesriem/Sossusvlei lodges are the premium add-on; the 5-day Naukluft 120 km trail is the hardcore one.

What to pack

Dawn starts near 0 °C in June–August with 25 °C+ afternoons — dress in removable layers. Sand shoes/crocs for dune climbs, 3 L water per person on dunes, sun kit non-negotiable. Book Sossusvlei-region beds months ahead.

Park fees

Park permit ≈ **N$100 (~US$6–8)/adult/day** via Namibia Parks (Metix/portal), gates at Sesriem open at/just before sunrise for overnight guests only — staying inside the gate is the dawn-dune hack. Verify current fees.

Wildlife safety

No dangerous-game concerns on foot in the dune country, but heat is the hazard: start at dawn, water discipline, and never leave vehicles marked routes in the plains.
