The Skeleton Coast is not a game park in any conventional sense — it is a mood: Benguela fog, black whale bones and rusted hulls, a green fog-line where dunes meet surf. The southern section is self-drive-accessible (Torra/ Terrace Bay, permit at the gate, no overnight camping); the northern Skeleton Coast Park is fly-in only, hosted by the concession lodges that hold the keys to desert-adapted lion and elephant country. Pair with Damaraland’s riverbed drives inland.

What to pack

Cold, damp, windy even in summer — fleeces and windbreakers in every month. Fly-in guests pack soft duffels; the fog eats sunsets and hands out sand-blasts everything, so seal your camera.

Park fees

Southern section permits ≈ N$100–150/person at the gate (day visits only); fly-in lodges price all-inclusive (from ≈ US$1,000+/night, flights included). Cape Cross seal reserve charges a small separate fee. Confirm current terms.

Wildlife safety

Do not approach seals (bulls bite) or the desert-adapted lions — guides manage all on-foot time. Fog driving is genuinely disorienting; drive fog hours only if unavoidable, lights on, slow.
