The most accessible of the southern parks, reached by a good tarmac road from Dar es Salaam, which makes it a realistic two-day trip from the city. The Mkata floodplain delivers dependable elephant, giraffe, zebra and buffalo, and the hippo pools along the main circuit are a reliable stop.

Migration timing

Not on the Great Migration route. Game concentrates along the Mkata floodplain in the dry season (Jun-Oct); the park is accessible year-round.

Light, breathable clothing for the hot Mkata plains, sun protection, and cash in small notes for gate fees and village stalls on the access road.

Park fees

Entrance is roughly US$30-40 per person per 24 hours — the most affordable of the listed parks — payable by card or pre-arranged by your operator. Confirm current TANATOCA rates.

Wildlife safety

The Mkata floodplain offers easy roadside game viewing, but lions and buffalo are present — remain in the vehicle except at designated sites. The Dar access road is the bigger hazard: drive daylight hours only.
