A collapsed volcanic caldera holding one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. Because the crater floor is enclosed, sightings are reliable: lion, elephant, buffalo and, if you are lucky, one of the few remaining black rhino. Descend at dawn to beat the convoy of vehicles, and keep an eye on the soda flats of Lake Magadi for flamingo.

Migration timing

The crater is a year-round resident system, but Jan-Mar brings migration herds onto the adjacent Ndutu plains and wildebeest calving — the crater floor is at its fullest then.

What to pack

Warm layers are essential — the crater rim sits at 2,300 m and mornings are genuinely cold. Rain jacket even in the dry season, binoculars, and closed shoes for the rim walks.

Park fees

Entry is roughly US$70-80 per person per 24 hours plus a separate crater service fee per vehicle, administered by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (not TANATOCA). Confirm current fees — they change more often than most parks.

Wildlife safety

The crater has permanent lion, hyena and buffalo populations — stay in the vehicle at all times. Black rhino sightings keep a distance; do not direct your driver to close in. Picnic sites are shared with birds and baboons: guard your food.

A flagship park: expect higher park fees and premium lodges, and plan further ahead in peak season.
