Northern Circuit (Manyara)

Known for its baobabs and for enormous elephant herds that gather along the Tarangire River in the dry season. It is a natural first or last stop on a northern circuit itinerary, closer to Arusha than the Serengeti, and the birding is excellent for a park this size.

Migration timing

Not a migration park — the dry season Jun-Oct concentrates enormous elephant and game numbers along the Tarangire River. The green season disperses herds into the wider ecosystem.

What to pack

Light layers for hot days, a windbreaker for open-vehicle afternoons, plenty of water, and a telephoto lens or binoculars — the park is famous for its elephant herds at a distance along the river.

Park fees

Entrance is roughly US$45-50 per person per 24 hours, payable by card at the gate or pre-paid through your operator. Fees are revised periodically — verify current TANATOCA rates.

Wildlife safety

Tarangire's elephants are habituated but wild — keep the vehicle still and the engine low around breeding herds, and never position yourself between a mother and calf on walking safaris. Tsetse flies bite here: neutral colours help.
