A vast, rugged park where the Great Ruaha River draws big prides of lion and large elephant herds. Ruaha is a transitional zone where eastern and southern species overlap, which makes the birding and antelope list unusually rich. Remoteness keeps visitor numbers low, so the sightings feel genuinely wild.

Migration timing

Not a migration park. The dry season (May-Nov) is prime: elephants and predators crowd the Great Ruaha River as it shrinks. Green season (Dec-Apr) rewards birders.

What to pack

Hot, dry days and cool nights: breathable layers, a warm layer for dawn drives, sun hat, and malaria precautions for dusk. Camps are remote — bring any personal medication with you.

Park fees

Entrance is roughly US$45-60 per person per 24 hours depending on season, administered by TANATOCA. Remote camps usually collect and pre-pay fees — confirm with your operator.

Wildlife safety

Ruaha holds one of East Africa's largest lion populations and significant wild dogs. Walks are ranger-escorted only; around camps at night, always ask staff to escort you to your tent.

A flagship park: expect higher park fees and premium lodges, and plan further ahead in peak season.
