Bwindi is not a savanna park — it is 331 km² of steep, vine-choked montane rainforest, and trekking it is a genuine hike: two to eight hours on mud slopes behind an armed ranger and trackers before the hour spent with a gorilla family. Four trailhead sectors let you match permits to lodges; Buhoma (north) is the classic and busiest, Nkuringo and Rushaga (south) pair with Kisoro and Rwanda crossings, Ruhija sits highest and coldest. Porters (US$15–20) are strongly recommended — hiring one supports a local family and saves your knees.

What to pack

Worn-in waterproof hiking boots, gaiters or trousers tucked into socks (biting ants), gardening gloves for vines, rain jacket whatever the forecast, 2–3 L water, and cash for the porter. A walking stick is provided by rangers.

Park fees

Gorilla permits cost **US$800 per person** (foreign non-resident) via Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) or licensed operators — far below Rwanda’s US$1,500. Book 3–6 months ahead for dry-season dates; the habituation experience runs US$1,500. Park entry (US$40/day) is additional. Verify current prices with UWA.

Wildlife safety

Gorillas are 96 % genetically our kin and susceptible to our diseases: keep the 7–10 m distance, no trekking if ill, follow ranger instructions to the letter. Forest elephants and buffalo exist in Bwindi — the armed rangers are there for a reason.

A flagship park: expect higher park fees and premium lodges, and plan further ahead in peak season.
