Kibale’s 766 km² of mid-altitude forest holds the highest density of primates in Africa, and its habituated chimps deliver the continent’s most reliable great-ape tracking outside gorilla country — a thunderous, branch-shaking experience when a troop crashes through the canopy. The standard track lasts ~3 h; the habituation option follows researchers from nest-to-nest. Everyone pairs it with the Bigodi swamp walk, a community-run wetland circuit famous for great blue turacos.

What to pack

Same kit logic as Bwindi: boots with grip, long trousers, rain layer, insect repellent (forests hold more biting flies than gorilla country), and gloves if you plan to grab vines on steep sections.

Wildlife safety

Follow the 8 m chimp distance rule; they are stronger than gorillas and far less calm. Rangers carry rifles for forest buffalo, not chimps.
